Frequently asked questions
When compared to air travel, you’re likely to save significant money (and stress) by choosing pet land transportation. However, because there are so many different factors that impact transporting your pets, a flat rate just isn’t possible. The distance, your ideal time frame, and the number of pets you plan to move all impact the final cost.
At Shake A Leg Transport, we offer customizable services to transport your pets, whether it’s across the state or across the country. Your beloved pets enjoy a comfortable and stress-free ride in a new 2023 Jeep Rubicon or a new 2023 Ram Pro Master Transport Van with a Crew Cab to their new location, all while you have peace of mind knowing they’re safe.

Moving with a pet can be a challenge, many animals are stressed by major life changes. Planning ahead can make the move easier on your pet – and on you. There are specific requirements for pet transport, and they vary greatly depending on the mode of transportation and the destination. Here are some common requirements:
Travel Crate: We offer travel crates by Lucky Duck Made in The USA with a 5 Star crash test rating by The Center For Pet Safety.
Health Check: Our transportation services, require a recent health check from a veterinarian. This may include vaccinations, wellness certificates, and, in some cases, blood tests. This is for the safety of your precious “pet” loved one and for the safety of others.
Comfort Stops: For long journeys, there are requirements for comfort stops. These allow pets to be taken out of their travel crate for a break, bathroom time, and care and attention.
Booking in Advance: Always best to schedule in advance to guarantee a specific Date and a spot with us.
Identification: Ensure your pet has proper and correct identification, including a collar with an ID tag and a microchip. This is always important for the identity of your pet.
Preparing your pet for transport is the best way to create a safe and stress-free journey.
Before the transport day:
Visit the Veterinarian for a health and vaccinations check-up, and get a health certificate if required.
Microchip your Pet. If your pet doesn’t have a microchip, consider getting one. It provides a permanent form of identification. Be sure to input your accurate information on the microchip’s registry.
Additionally, double-check that your pet’s collar has an ID tag with current contact information.
Familiarize your pet with the travel crate or carrier well in advance. Leave it open in the house, allowing your pet to explore and get comfortable. Toss treats in the crate for your pet to find and create positive associations. Place familiar items in the carrier, such as your pet’s favorite blanket or toys, to provide a sense of security.
If your pet is not used to being in a crate, gradually increase the time they spend inside, making it a positive experience with treats and praise.
Confirm that your pet and crate are travel-ready by checking with the specific transport service for any additional guidelines or recommendations.
On transport day:
Provide your pet with plenty of exercise before the journey to help them relax during transport.
Plan your pet’s feeding schedule around the transport time, avoiding heavy meals right before travel.
Make sure the crate is secure and well-ventilated.
If your pet is prone to anxiety, consider using calming products recommended by your veterinarian, such as sprays or pheromone collars.
Keep all necessary documents, including health certificates and import permits, organized and easily accessible.
Each pet is unique, so tailor your preparations to your pet’s individual needs and characteristics.
YES!! We go a step further than other pet transport companies and, when you book with us, we will provide you with access to track our Shake A Leg Transport iPhone to provide peace of mind during travel. Tracking your baby every step of the way will allow you peace of mind while they are traveling with us, and you will be able to track them on their entire adventure. As an added bonus and a special thank you for joining the Shake A Leg family, we will provide your pet with their very own Apple Air Tag upon completion of their journey. And the best news is that we will be the ones transporting. Not a team you don’t know or haven’t met.
It’s ideal to book your pet transport services as far in advance as possible. The specific timeframe can vary depending on several factors, like the mode of transport, the time of year, and any specialized services needed.
During peak moving seasons or holidays, transportation services may experience higher demand. In such cases, booking well in advance becomes even more important.
Sixty (60) days in advance is an ideal time frame for most cases. By booking in advance, you not only secure a spot for your pet, but also have ample time to prepare all necessary documentation, acclimate your pet to the travel process, and address any specific requirements.
Pet safety is always a top priority in our pet transport services.
To maintain your pet’s safety before and during travel, we will:
Check certifications of your pet’s health, including current vaccinations
Confirm a collar for your pet with ID and contact information for your new location
Use a safe and secure crate or carrier for pet shipping
Make several stops along the way to relieve your pet of the tension of riding in a car.
Ensure your pet has the food and water it needs to stay hydrated and nourished.
Many people in your life may love pets, but they may not be familiar with the pet-handling procedures that trained professionals learn. We are trained to take precautions to protect your pet in many circumstances that a layperson may not anticipate. That way, you have the peace of mind that nothing will go wrong. We are trained and certified in Pet CPR and First Aid.
Be sure to obtain immunization records and health certificates early. Cats should be acclimated to their crates at least an hour before we arrival and spend some time in the crate periodically prior to moving day. Food and snacks normally given to your pet should be prepared and stored in plastic containers or baggies.
Dogs on our door-to-door shuttles will be walked every 3 1/2 to four hours. Cats will have fresh, clean litter boxes.
When traveling, there are times we need to rest and rejuvenate before we get back on the road. Rest assured, your pets are never left alone in the van. If we take a rest at a rest stop, we nap and remain in the van. If we decide to rent a hotel room, your pets will be treated to a night at the hotel we stay at and we will cover the pet fees associated with this. Letting them lay out on a blanket for the night and stretch their legs from travel, or, if you prefer, remaining in the crate inside the room with us. These are family members and are treated as such. We would never leave your fur babies unattended AT ANY TIME!!
We are trained and certified in Pet CPR and emergency response, however, if we feel that emergency intervention is needed, we do have PCI Insurance for this and will take your baby to the closest veterinarian. We will stay and wait until your furry baby is stable and receives diagnosis and treatment. Of course, you will be involved in every aspect every step of the way!!
Cats must be handled and secured in crates only by the owners at pick-up and drop-off. Drivers do not handle cats and will only change the litter box and food and water while transporting.
Before each trip, we disinfect the crates with bleach and the beds we provide are washed in the washing machine with bleach and hot water. After each trip, the van is stripped and thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to prepare for the next trip. In addition, your pets will never interact with the other furry travelers as each fur baby is taken out one at a time so there is no risk of dog fights, etc. This also assures the much needed one on one time we provide that is extremely important for the comfort of your pet.
